How Can you Arrest a Mermaid?

Actress Daryl Hannah and over 500 others were arrested at a sit-in outside the White House to voice their opposition to the planned  construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.  The pipeline would run from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Hannah is bringing attention to what could otherwise be a quiet deal between Obama and the oil industry. Earlier this month, an editorial in The New York Times opposed the pipeline, reading, “We have two main concerns: the risk of oil spills along the pipeline, which would traverse highly sensitive terrain, and the fact that the extraction of petroleum from the tar sands creates far more greenhouse emissions than conventional production does.”
The hope of the Obama presidency was the vision to eliminate our dependence on oil.  Thank you, Daryl…Your move Mr. President.

Yesterday’s Other Story

While our nation’s politicians attended last night’s, “prom night”, the other story was Carol Browner’s resignation.  As Obama’s energy czar, Ms. Browner was the President’s top adviser when it came to climate change and energy matters.  Sadly, no comprehensive energy and climate bill addressing the threat of global warming has been passed into law during her term over the past two years.  With Ms. Browner’s departure, it seems unlikely that  there will be any movement on this issue of paramount importance.  Most of the world’s top scientists have been warning us about climate change for decades, and now is the time to enact real change. As they campaign for votes and fight amongst themselves, our politicians have forgotten that we belong to the earth…the Earth does not belong to us. The threat of global warming is already a crisis, and environmental issues need to be an immediate priority for all politicians, regardless of their political affiliation.
