Remembering Sergeant Shriver

Yesterday, the world lost one of its greatest citizens, Sergeant Shriver. Shriver was the driving force behind the creation of the Peace Corps, and served as its first director. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Peace Corps. Through the Peace Corps, American volunteers have served in over 77 countries. Shriver wanted the Peace Corps to be volunteer-driven, and for no one to serve more than five years, in order to keep it fresh and not be bureaucratic. Many of these volunteers will tell you that they joined the Peace Corps to do good by improving the lives of others. America and the world owe a lot to Sergeant Shriver. So many lives have been touched and enriched by the Peace Corps. Sergeant Shriver will be remembered. The dream is still alive.
