Now for this Commercial Interruption!

It’s bad enough that your television shows have to be interrupted by commercials, but why do they have to be so insulting?

First, there are our friends at BP playing Cajun music, urging us to come back to the Gulf of Mexico, where the beaches are beautiful and the seafood never tasted better. Or the smiling faces of the friendly folks at Exxon Mobil and Chevron, pumping not just billions of dollars out of the ground, but also into commercials targeted to influence how you think.

How willing are the news networks going to be to criticize Big Oil, when Big Oil is paying their bills through the commercials? You know that saying? ”Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.” You see how well the Chinese Wall worked for Arthur Anderson.

It’s one thing when oil companies and clean coal want to persuade you into thinking they’re your best friends and that they care about the environment. But now there is a recent trend of “Environmental Bashing” commercials. Shaquille O’Neal promotes Buick by stating: “I’ve got shoes bigger than most hybrids- more stylish, too.”

Now there’s the Geico gecko commercial, mocking a couple that wants to buy only organic food at the market, making them look like over-educated geeks. The guy is even wearing an argyle sweater. This is just one more insult to people trying to do the right thing and live a healthy lifestyle.

I am off for a hike in the Santa Monica Mountains…without commercial interruption!
