Yesterday, the Stroller Brigade, mostly a group of moms and children, who marched at the Capitol to urge Congress to pass the Safe Chemicals Act to supersede the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act. The Safe Chemicals Act would require chemical manufacturers to prove that their chemicals are safe before they can be sold. Since the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act, only five chemicals have been banned under this law.

According to Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families: “Early puberty, childhood cancer, infertility, learning and developmental disabilities are rising at alarming rates. Studies show links between toxic chemicals we’re exposed to every day and many of these negative health trends. Almost all pregnant women in America contain toxic chemicals in their bodies.”

“The stroller brigade is carrying an important message to Congress that we’re not going to stand by and let our kids continue to be exposed to chemicals that make them sick,” Lautenberg, chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Superfund, Toxics and Environmental Health, told The Huffington Post.

At Organically Grown, we support the efforts of the Stroller Brigade. It will be interesting to see how this bill does in Congress. This should not be a Democrat or Republican matter, as the safety of our children is a non-partisan issue.
